71-Year-Old Man Riding Bike Dies after Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver on Cole Grande Road in Valley Center Neighborhood
VALLEY CENTER, CA (December 20, 2022) – Mario Lucero was killed in a bicycle hit-and-run crash on Cole Grade Road in Valley Center late Saturday afternoon.
The fatal crash happened around 5:34 p.m. on December 17, just north of Horse Creek Trail. According to the California Highway Patrol, Lucero was riding his green bicycle on the right shoulder when a Ford SUV, possibly a Ford Expedition or F Series pick-up, struck him.
After the crash, the driver of the SUV drove away leaving behind their right front headlight.
Lucero suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was a 71-year-old Valley Center resident.
An investigation is underway. Authorities urged witnesses to call the Oceanside Area CHP office at 760-643-3400.
